Regulations Wollongong Exit and Emergency Lighting in Australia

In Australia, all buildings must be compliant with the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The BCA sets out a comprehensive set of requirements for building design and construction. The regulations regarding Wollongong exit and emergency lighting are contained in Part 4 of the BCA.

Exit lighting

This includes areas where people may need to evacuate quickly from a building during an emergency situation, or where people may also need to access exits during an emergency situation.

The regulations require that exit signs, illuminated by fluorescent lights, or other means as approved by the Authority, shall be provided at each point where there is a potential means of egress from any part of a building. The sign shall be illuminated immediately after power failure or loss of power for more than four hours.

The regulations state that where any door has less than 2m clear width, there must be an illuminated sign at least 1.5m above the floor level on each side of such door indicating its location and purpose.

Wollongong Exit and emergency lighting is a safety requirement in Australia. The requirements are as follows:

Exit lights shall be located at the front or rear of the building, on each side of the stairway and at other locations where they are necessary.

The exit discharge shall be illuminated by a minimum of 2 emergency exit signs that are illuminated continuously with white light meeting the requirements of Standard A1189.2:1999 (incorporating Amendments).

The floor area above the exit discharge shall have a minimum of one continuous horizontal bar of white light located above and within 30 m (100 ft) horizontally from the floor level for each 100 m (330 ft) vertically above this point.

The Australian Standard for Exit signs, Emergency lighting and evacuation instructions (AS 1317.4) is the national standard for regulating exit signs, emergency lighting and evacuation instructions. This standard applies to all buildings, structures and complexes that have more than one storey.

The standard applies to all exits from buildings or structures and includes both exit signs and emergency lighting. The standard also applies to all buildings, structures and complexes with at least one storey above ground level that require the provision of an exit sign or emergency lighting. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on the types of signs required for each type of building, structure and complex under this standard; how they should be designed, installed and maintained; how they should be labelled; how they should relate to each other; how they should relate to other information provided; what maintenance measures need to be taken; what testing procedures need to be carried out on them; who is responsible for ensuring compliance with this document; penalties for non-compliance.

Exit lighting must be installed and maintained in accordance with the following requirements:

1. Exit signs, door signs and exit markings must be illuminated by means of a light source that is visible from within the building in all weather conditions, including darkness. If an exit sign is not required by this Code, it shall be marked by means of an approved sign or device.

2. The minimum level of illumination for a stairway or ramp with horizontal exits is 10 lux (69 foot candles) at any point in the stairway or ramp when measured at floor level.

3. The minimum level of illumination for a stairway with vertical exits is 30 lux (2 foot candles) at any point in the stairway when measured at floor level.

4. The minimum level of illumination for a corridor adjacent to stairs or ramps with horizontal exits is 10 lux (69 foot candles) at any point in the corridor when measured at floor level.

5. The minimum level of illumination for a corridor adjacent to stairs or ramps with vertical exits is 30 lux (2 foot candles) at any point in the corridor when measured at floor level.

6. The maximum distance between each fixture and the nearest wall, column or other obstruction shall not exceed 391.
